Working with your shadows

What is Shadow Work?

Shadow work involves working with your unconscious mind to uncover the parts of yourself that you repress and hide from yourself. This can include trauma or parts of your personality that you subconsciously consider undesirable. Anyone can do shadow work on their own.

I highly recommend working on your shadow work if you truly want to discover who you are and where you want to go in life. However, this can be one of the hardest steps to face because it does force you to look inward and confront challenges and moments from your past in order to heal through releasing them.

There are many ways to work on your shadow work. For me, my journey began when I experienced a mental breakdown on January 6th, 2015. This moment forced me to seek professional help and learn about the shadows I needed to work on.

The universe brought me a village of people with so many tools to help me through my shadows. One shadow that came to surface right away was my people-pleasing tendency and always wanting to help others before myself. It was through facing this shadow that I learned the benefits of self-care and filling my own cup before letting the overflow go to those who I care about most.

It wasn’t easy for me, but through the help of a psychologist during my mental breakdown, I learned how to grow from it so that I could move forward in my life towards my best life. One of the best tools I learned was to focus on self-care, allowing me to gain the strength I needed to take on the different shadows of my past to help get through them in one piece.

I highly recommend seeking professional help if you are looking to dive deep into your shadow work or need a sounding board to work through these darker moments in your life. It can be really hard to face the darkness alone, and you just have to find your person.

Once you find someone to help you through this journey, you can begin using a wide range of techniques to dive in when you’re ready. These tools can include meditation, musical therapy, water therapy, inner child work, and grounding techniques. Essentially, when you start tapping into your unconscious mind, you will start to be guided one step at a time by listening to your internal being—the only person who knows you best and knows your heart’s desire towards your highest purpose in life.

Journaling is a great tool to use while going through your shadow work. It allows you to “data dump” all your emotions, thoughts, and feelings during a tough moment in your life and also helps to clear your mind to help you sleep at night. It is also great in helping to digest the adventure in life you’re going through and gives you a point to look back on down the road to see how far you’ve come.

In conclusion, shadow work is the process of working with your unconscious mind to uncover the parts of yourself that you repress and hide from yourself. While it can be a difficult and challenging process, it is also incredibly rewarding as it allows you to discover who you truly are and where you want to go in life. There are many ways to approach shadow work, including seeking professional help, using various techniques like meditation and journaling, and finding your support system to guide you through the process. By facing your shadows and working through them, you can heal from past trauma and become more self-aware, leading to a more fulfilling life. Remember, this journey is unique to each individual, and taking it one step at a time with patience and compassion for yourself is essential.
